As I get older I have more of an appreciation for my mom who passed over 21 years ago. This article is dedicated to her as I remember the things my mom taught me. She carried the qualities of the Sacred Feminine.
My mother didn’t teach me in a direct way. In fact the day before my first day at St Luke’s School in the Bronx, NY mom said, “oh no, tomorrow is your first day at school. I better teach you had to write your name.” Now I find that very funny and indicative of how busy she was. The things my mom taught me I learned by watching how she lived her life.
When I got married at 19 I saw that both of my parents were practical, hard working people who put family first. They gave us a roof over our heads, food, basic clothes and Church on Sunday. So as a young wife I incorporated the things my mom taught me like taking care of the practicalthings in life.
Story Telling
As a little girl my mother told me so many stories of her life. She painted her stories for me so vividly.I realize now that story telling was one of her gifts which I loved as it was our special time together where she wasn’t busy being the wife and a working mother of 5.
She was christened Bridget as the oldest girl out of 7 children born on a poor farm in Mayo, Ireland. At 17 she was brought to America by her mom’s sister who promised to send my mother to school. Instead her aunt had a governess’s job lined up for her in New Jersey. Her aunt said she should change her name to Della because Bridget was “too Irish.” Her story telling was a way to heal her broken heart as she never wanted to leave her home and family in Ireland.
Mom’s story telling flowed freely through her, as did her tears, where I could see the rolling green fields of Ireland that she longed for. She told stories of how poor they were on the farm and how her mother Hanora had to walk miles to town to sell eggs. Her dad Michael went to England 6 months of the year to work on another man’s farm so that he could send money home to Hanora for tea, flower and sugar.
Loving and Kind
Mom was naturally loving and kind to us kids, her friends, neighbors and her family back in Ireland.One of our neighbors in the Bronx had 5 kids and mom would send me over to hang her laundry on the roof of our apartment building for her.
Mom was loving and kind. She sent me down almost every night with a home cooked supper for our old neighbor Josie with the glass eye.
As a 9 year old kid I was annoyed at having to run around taking care of our neighbors for mom. Then the anger melted when I saw the smiles on their faces and the gratitude in their eyes for the loving and kind gestures of my mother.
I reaped the benefits of my mother’s love and compassion for others as I learned first hand the joy of giving. Although my parents just got by financially they lived abundantly by sharing the little they had with others. These are but a few of the things my mom taught me by example as I watched how she lived her life.
