Oat straw herbal infusion is one of several herbal infusions that I make at home.I have always been interested in herbs to improve my health and well being.
My resources for herbal information have been from articles I’ve read, my friends andSusun Weed, a world renouned herbalist. Our Saugerties, NY house is just down the road from Susun. Sometimes we see her teaching about herbs or tending to her goats in the field.
A few months ago I read about Susun Weed’sherbal infusions. Igot very excited when I discoverd how simple they are to make. We have to be ready to make changes in our lives and incorporate new positive things. Well, I was ready and also very tired of feeling run down. There has been lots of challenges in my life including menopause and a huge movefrom New York back to Seattle.
Susun Weed explains that drinking herbal teas does not provide enough nourishment for our bodies because of the small amount of herbs in tea.Herbal infusionsare different. You use large amounts of an herb brewed for several hours which provides lots of nourishment per cup.
Making Herbal Infusions
Making herbal infusionsbegins with using one herb at a time. Oat Straw herbal infusion is a grass or the straw from the oat grain plant. You need 1 cup (1 ounce) of dried oat straw, a 1 quart glass jar with a metal lid, 1 quart of boiling water, a strainer and a wooden spoon.
Making herbal infusionsbegins with placing the 1 cup of dried herb in a quart jar which is then filled to the top with boiling water. Using the wooden spoon push the herbs floating on top down into the water, adding more boiling water to the top of the brim. Screw the lid on tightly and let it brew for 4 hours. Usually I make myherbal infusionsbefore going to bed and let it steep overnight.
The next step inmaking herbal infusionsis to strain it well. The mushy herbs I place in the yard waste bucket. Then I rinse the glass jar and pour the liquidherbal infusionback in the jar after pouring myself a cup to drink.

Don’t Mix the Herbs
The rest I chill in the refrigerator to be consumed within 36 hours. Drinking 2-4 cups ofherbal infusiona day is recommended by Susun Weed. I alternate oat strawwith comfrey and nettle leaf throughout the week, one herb at a time, each herb providing different types of nourishment for my body.
